The default Windows 10 Mail app, the one that comes preloaded with the OS, is causing quite a commotion for Gmail users, with a bug said to be behind silent email removal.
As in, the issue results in silent removal of all emails that you send to your contacts.
It appears that a recent update for the Mail app is the reason behind the application not playing nicely with the Gmail email service. If you have installed version 16005.12827.20200.0, which was released on May 28, then you might have a cause of concern.
This is the one that breaks down the Gmail account integration.
Many a user confirmed this problem on Microsoft’s Community forums.
One of the affected user comments:
“I have noticed that when I respond to emails, the email I send disappears and cannot be found in sent items, outbox, bin, spam, or anywhere actually. The disappeared email cannot be found on Gmail’s web interface either. It appears that it is automatically deleted and erased from the server.”
Microsoft is yet to acknowledge the issue, or even confirm that it is investigating it, so users are on their own for now.
But the silver lining is that the emails are not permanently deleted. They are stored in the Spam folder in Gmail. And consequently, this is the workaround, and pretty much the only way to deal with this issue until Redmond rolls out a fix.
You will have to configure a filter in your Gmail account in the web interface to instructs apps to no longer direct emails you send to the Spam folder. This will keep them in the correct place after you send a new email.
Hopefully, a fix arrives soon.
